Proverbs 12:23 NIV

This is one of the clearest indications of maturity in a leader and a believer. Knowing how to stay silent even when you know the answer or proper counsel because you understand that the listener is not in a condition to hear it is a truly wise gift. Too often the less mature person can’t help but blurt out what they think or know. Listening and discerning where those you lead or influence are in their story is invaluable to helping others learn and grow. Telling a truly angry person to calm down often has the opposite effect. Often what they really need is a listener who also, possibly, offers guard rails and a safe place to vent while they internally process. After a period of calming they are more likely to listen to wise yet compassionate counsel. Great counsel has often been wasted because someone failed to understand the other persons internal struggles or because the advice is offered more to show the advisers wisdom than to actually assist the person in the need of it. I have always appreciated those in my journey with me who know when to sit, listen and nod then later gently probe a bit for my readiness for their counsel. Both kinds of counsel and leaders may be right but only the prudent is helpful and a blessing. Today be a blessing. #BeTheEdge
