Proverbs 15:1 AMP

When I finished placing the first verse into today’s devotional I almost stopped and just left it there. I mean seriously, does this need much explanation, especially in today’s world? If you want to be a world changer, a powerful influencer, then do this. Those of us with Simon Peter‘s personality have a really hard time with this one. Whether it’s on social media or in conversations with family or just in daily life, most of us have experienced someone or a group of someones who have come to us in wrath. And man is it ever tempting to respond in kind. I don’t mean to respond kindly. I mean there can be an overwhelming temptation to respond at the same level and degree of passion we are confronted with. In the book of Judges, chapter 8, we see that “soft speech is like oil on bruised skin to soften and heal it.” In that same chapter Gideon shows us how a soft word can overcome wrath and anger. It is interesting for me to see how many times, especially in a counseling setting, the two I am counseling don’t necessarily disagree, they just went into the conversation with elevated passions and emotions. Today, intentionally soften your tone; better yet, reserve your response unless absolutely necessary, and then do it gently as though you care more about the other person than in being right and winning. #BeTheEdge
