Proverbs 17:1 NIV

In the King James the word sacrifice is used in this verse. It say “a house full of sacrifices with strife”. It’s a solid translation of the initial intent. Behind this verse is the picture of a king offering a feast utilizing “the peace offerings, portions of which were eaten by the offerer and his friends. Such a feast was supposed to indicate great piety on the part of the host and his intimate associates; but if marred by discord and contention, it lost all its precious character.” (Ironside) At this point Solomon let’s us know we would be better off reflecting on the purpose and gift of the sacrifice. In the New Testament Paul gives the same caution, perhaps even rebuke, to those in Corinth who were taking part in the Lord’s supper, turning the time into feasts that became drunken parties. It is particularly instructive for us to consider how we handle not only the Lords Supper but everything in our life that might cheapen the sacrifice God made by giving His only Son to die for our sin. Does our behavior reflect a life lived in complete gratitude for the price paid to redeem us? Today reflect on what was sacrificed for your life and live to a degree of humility and reverence that shows you get it. #BeTheEdge
