I’ve said before that I hate lies. I don’t want to spend the time and energy necessary either deciphering a lie or reconstructing truth from misinformation. Be straight and as Jesus puts it, “let your yes be yes and your no be no.” He actually goes on to expand that thought by saying anything more is from the evil one. The older I get the more I long for simple yeses and no’s. In this verse Solomon repeats a very regular theme in his writings. It is actually a deeper theme that runs throughout God’s word. What leaves our mouth very often reflects our heart. A couple days ago I mentioned the power of mentors in my life. Besides deep, godly wisdom the other most important thing they offered my journey was the freedom to know they always spoke clear, clean unadulterated truth, whether I liked it or not. I have had the luxury in my current role to surround my life and ministry with board and advisory board members as well as supporters and leaders who to a person are those kinds of men and women. They ask the hard and strategic questions from clean, honest motives and offer counsel from the same place. What Solomon is saying is not as much about who should or should not be a liar but rather make sure as a follower of God there is harmony between your character and your speech. Today seek out those people for all areas of your story and let them be God’s tools to help write it. #BeTheEdge
