Proverbs 20:30 NIV

I read this list yesterday titled “How do you defend yourself physically?”

Focus on the vulnerable areas

  1. Hammer strike. Using your car keys is one of the easiest ways to defend yourself. …
  2. Groin kick. …
  3. Heel palm strike. …
  4. Elbow strike. …
  5. Alternative elbow strikes. …
  6. Escape from a ‘bear hug attack’ …
  7. Escape with hands trapped. …
  8. Escape from side headlock.

Seriously, who hasn’t thought at one time or another that it would feel really good to deliver a little “purging”. Maybe more often than once. At first glance this verse might seem to be about that. But, this really has nothing to do with really coming to blows and trying to hurt somebody else or even God doing that to us. This is about consequences of sin. This is about the pain and suffering that it causes not just for others but for our very own lives. We read in scripture where as parents we are to discipline, actually it says to not spare the rod, out of love. The purpose is to make sin so uncomfortable we don’t want to go there. As with a parent it is to make our child so uncomfortable with the consequences of bad or dangerous behavior that they don’t want to repeat it. It is done out of love. Also if we accept the pain of discipline it has a cleansing effect on our lives. In considering the fairness and value of the “wounding” we do well to remember that Jesus took a beating and sever wounding for our sin while we reap the benefit of the cleansing. Today don’t resist God’s discipline, learn from it and grow. #BeTheEdge
