Proverbs 22:4 NIV

When I was younger I thought humility was an external characteristic. I though it was experienced through self-deprecation or quietly allowing others to make fun of you or put you down. I had a mother once tell me about how her ex-husband use to ‘teach’ her som humility by reminding him not to celebrate something good that he did because it could make another child feel bad. If he had a good hit or made a good play in little league baseball he should feel badly for the child he was playing against who felt bad. I put that on the list of really bad parenting. Today, at 30 years old, that young man, who tests out as a genius, lives alone, can’t get up the courage to interview for a job and works at a gas station putting snacks on shelves. He’s not humble. He’s broken. On the other extreme is the arrogance Solomon knows destroys us just as quickly.  I read this a few moments ago, “In an exaltation of power and freedom, Icarus flew so high that the sun melted the wax holding feathers on his wings, and he crashed into the sea and drowned.” The humility God desires needs to be developed. It grows as we recognize that all good in us comes from Him. And that all God gives is beautiful things and worthy to be acknowledged as such. It’s a challenging balance. Today thank God for His gifts in your life and walk humbly in them. #BeTheEdge
