I just took a test on Proverbs chapter 1. I have read this chapter no less then 12 times a year for at least 8 years. My mediocre math skills puts that at 96 times. I only scored a 21 out of 25. I was a bit stunned. The point there is that no matter how many times we read scripture there is always something new to be learned. Further it is good to understand that Solomons use of certain words is intentional. Where we use some of these words interchangeably he uses them specifically. Learning, knowledge, wisdom and understanding each have a very distinct meaning when used by Solomon. For example I could learn the answers to the quiz without ever truly understanding their meaning. The goal of Proverbs, actually all of scripture, is for us to understand. Understanding means to live what we learn and to pass that understanding along to others. I recently read this in Bibleref, “Proverbs Chapter 1 is clearly born out of Solomon’s life history. Solomon held himself back from no earthly pleasure, he had everything he could ever desire, and in the end he saw the foolishness of his actions. Chapter 1 is Solomon’s reflection on his own life, how he had all the wisdom of God available to him, and yet chose to follow after foolish desires. Other chapters detail the advice which this experience allows Solomon to give.” Understanding came for Solomon after living life. This chapter and the whole book is a reflection on what the wisest man other then Jesus learned. Today read, understand and apply. #BeTheEdge
