Proverbs 3:5 NIV

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;”

Most of us read this verse and immediately continue on to verse 6 in our minds—they are almost never separated. In over ten years of writing these daily devotions, I’ve only once used two verses from Proverbs together, and it was those two. This verse is a very simple instruction, yet it is incredibly hard to follow. We may start out with complete trust in God regarding a certain situation or issue, but over time—whether slowly or quickly—we begin to let our own opinions or past experiences creep into the equation. Notice that this verse doesn’t say to trust the Lord with some or even most of your heart. It very clearly and intentionally says “all.” God is fully aware that our hearts—our feelings and emotions—often lie to us. Benson, in his commentary, puts it this way: “Securely rely upon God’s wisdom, power, and goodness, and upon His providence and promises, for direction and help in all thine affairs and dangers.” Pretty clear. The bottom line is trust. We either trust God or we don’t. We don’t live by kind of trusting Him or trusting Him in most things. The ultimate example of how we are to trust is found in Jesus. He gave up His life and trusted His Father to raise Him from the dead—and He did. Today, put all of your trust in Him. #BeTheEdge
