I recently heard about a friend who is thinking about becoming a life coach. Over the past decade, this has become a very popular career move for counselors and a frequently sought-after resource for business leaders and others. I’m certainly a fan. If I were to look for passages of Scripture to define the role of a life coach, this one would be on the list. This verse also challenges us as parents and grandparents. It’s truly one of the key roles of a real friend as well. I have men in my life who provide this kind of support on my journey. I shudder to imagine who I would be without them. Bill, Mike, Rick, Dell, Todd, and at least a dozen more are the detectives God uses to help me discover motivations and perspectives I wasn’t even aware were influencing me. If The Edge does anything to help business leaders influence their corporate cultures for the Kingdom, this is a critical piece of how we do it. This verse doesn’t merely suggest that you might have some deep stuff in your soul—it declares that you definitely do. It also makes it clear that to live your best life—the one God created you to live—you need these kinds of people in your life, and they must be invited to look deeply. We are poorer without them.As you read this, I’m in Montana with some of the men on my list being encouraged and challenged. These are men who have provided this gift to me for decades. If you can’t name them you don’t have them. Today, identify and pursue those voices in your story. #BeTheEdge
