Hatred and love. Is there a clearer contrast than these two? Darkness and light. Definitely close, but Paul writes to tell the Corinthians that Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light. Hatred reveals itself as the sickness and brokenness in the heart. Love will always burst through. The difference between human love and God’s love is a question of capacity. Love of our own making is limited; God’s love is infinite. The reality for the believer is that when we come into a relationship with God through Jesus, we become a part of His expression of that love.Our responsibility, then, is to not let the flow of His love be blocked by anything else. Anything that interferes with us being His salt and light becomes an idol. As followers of Christ, we have no option but to reflect God’s love. I mean, we can try to cover it and look as silly as a lamp lit in a room and covered with a bucket. But ultimately, God’s Spirit will break through. When Jesus looked at His disciples, He didn’t say, “You ought to be the light of the world,” or “You can be the light of the world,” or even, “Why aren’t you the light of the world?” He looked at them and said, “You are the light of the world.” He looks at us today and says that, too. Our light reflects His love everywhere it goes. Even at times and in places where it’s not particularly wanted, we certainly know it is always, always needed. We don’t have a choice.
