I listened to a 25-year-old raised in a fairly remote region of the northeast explain racism today. He had done a lot of reading and watched a lot of documentaries and listened to a number of speakers talk about the subject. As I listened, I sensed his frustration with older people who seemed to take offense by this ‘young person presuming’ to tell them what to think. As I listened myself, I noticed an almost subconscious tendency to think the same thing. Because of my training as a counselor and working so many years with young business leaders I quickly shifted to asking questions to try and hear what was at the heart of this young man’s struggle. I came away challenged to re-evaluate some of my own assumptions and to be more intentional about my actions. The wisest leaders I know look for others with kingdom wisdom to speak into their journey believing they don’t know everything, and we all have much to learn from one another. Today might be a good time to listen and then to hear what others are truly saying. The world could use more of that right now. #BeTheEdge
