I recently had lunch with a businessman who was fascinated by the power of God’s spoken Word. He was intrigued to the point of considering having the Bible read aloud through his device at certain times. I agree—there’s power in the Word, and when spoken, it has the ability to sink deep into a person’s soul and bring transformation. Sometimes, I believe Jesus spoke out loud for the benefit of the hearers. I don’t believe He needed to speak in order for His command to take effect—He’s God. He can think it, and it happens. I believe many of His spoken words were for the benefit of those listening or witnessing. Unlike Jesus, who never spoke a word of evil, we are prone to say things that can wound deeply—sometimes in jest, sometimes in anger, and often just idly, without thinking. How often do we hear someone say something about a person, not realizing that person is within earshot? Many TV shows and movies use this exact scenario to drive their plot. As Solomon reminds us, our words can heal or hurt. Someone needs our healing words today; others would probably benefit more from our silence. Today, speak wisely—or not at all. #BeTheEdge
