Proverbs 16:2 NIV

I’m not exactly sure who Solomon is talking about in this verse, but I certainly know it’s not me. I am not one of those who thinks all my ways are pure. I know myself too well for that. That being said, there are times when I truly believe I am doing what I’m supposed to be doing, the way I’m supposed to be doing it, only to recognize later that there is some selfish, impure desire at work in the midst of what I’m doing. At its core, this verse is a recognition of self-deception. None of us are as pure as we want to believe. Scripture tells us that our best acts are like filthy rags compared to God. A pure heart can only be a gift from God. As we grow in Him and learn to hear from Him, seek His will first, and serve Him, our motives can align more closely with His. His Spirit works in us to purify our motives. But again, on my very best day, with my very best act, there is almost always at least a small slice of self-deception or pride involved. Part of spiritual growth is recognizing that tendency toward self-deception. The goal reflected in this verse is self-awareness and humility. Thankfully, as followers of Christ, we are wrapped in his righteousness. We aren’t justified by anything in our own hearts. Today, continue to strive for a heart that weighs pure before the Lord. #BeTheEdge

“All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.” Isaiah 64:6 NIV
