This verse gives us two clear takeaways. First, fools do not benefit from discipline. That’s a shame. Imagine going through discipline and it being wasted. To not learn from discipline is a double form of foolishness. You endure the correction, but it turns out to be a waste of the disciplinarian’s time, effort, and intent. For the one receiving it, it becomes punishment rather than helpful correction. I remember as a political science major, a professor asked us about the purpose of incarceration. Most of us answered that it was meant to rehabilitate people and return them to society as a benefit to all. He agreed that was an admirable goal, but said it was rarely achieved. More often, it only punished the person and hardened them into an even more dangerous criminal. The punishment became folly. Second, fools often try to discipline others in the wrong way. We see this all around us today. Many try to correct others while completely missing the biblical truth behind the issue. The discipline they give, designed in their own foolishness, is not only misguided—it can be harmful and even dangerous. How can the lost ever understand God’s true desire or His intended outcome for those who miss His mark? Today, be wise, be prudent and live. #BeTheEdge
