Proverbs 16:3 NIV

I’m speaking at a baccalaureate in a couple of days. This verse is appropriate for all of us, but at the moment, it seems especially suited to a crowd of graduating high school seniors. I wish someone had mentioned this truth to me when I graduated high school all those years ago. Like many of us, I learned this truth as life passed by. I discovered that when I pursued my own agenda, it was difficult and often didn’t go well at all. Thankfully, in His sovereign design, God either directed or redeemed my story in spite of my foolish, self-serving plans. I learned that it’s not just about committing my plans to the Lord, but about committing my entire life to Him—trusting that He is in control of my journey. As a husband and father, now a grandfather, it became clear that it was my responsibility to live a life committed to the Lord, because more than just my own journey was affected by my obedience and submission to His leading. The lives impacted—both positively and negatively—extended far beyond just me. I’m not implying that each person isn’t responsible for their own walk with God; they are. But when I live outside of God’s will, others can be affected, and even hurt, by my choices. After many years, I’ve come to celebrate my role in being committed to God in how I live—and letting Him take on the far greater task of directing the story. Today, let Him lead. #BeTheEdge
