Sometimes determining what is right and what is acceptable in a particular situation can be difficult. Tough love is always difficult to determine exactly when we should practice it. I never even liked the term “tough love,” but I certainly understand its importance. However, there are people who seem to enjoy tough love and always turn to it first. At that moment, I’m pretty sure it’s not the answer. Being kind is always right and acceptable, no matter what the circumstances. Being loving is always right and acceptable no matter what the circumstances. There are times when sacrificing can be easier than doing what is right, and those are specifically the times that Solomon is referring to. Jesus even told us in one place that if we have a sacrifice and someone has something against us, we should leave our sacrifice, go do what is right and acceptable, repair the relationship, reconcile, and then return and offer our gifts of sacrifice. It’s no surprise that God is concerned about our motives and our hearts and how we treat one another more than He is about how we deny ourselves.
