A few years ago, my wife and I were hanging out with some close friends in Atlanta. We were sharing about some of the struggles we were having with paying our bills on a minister’s salary with three teenagers in the house. In the middle of the conversation my friend told me that it’s not hard to get rich. I perked up. He said, “Sell liquor and porn.” Lose all respect for yourself and sentence your marriage and kids to destruction but get rich in the meantime. I understood what he was saying. There are plenty of good, godly people who make great incomes. There is no sin in that. His point was that I needed to stay focused on being the man God designed and called me to be. How my life turned out financially was a byproduct and very secondary to that. We are all tempted to pursue things, not necessarily money, that can pull our energy and focus off of God’s call to be salt and light – shine on and flavor the people in our story in such a way that they see God’s glory through us, and are drawn to Him. Today, let your focus be Him and watch as the rest of your story lines up with His glory. #BeTheEdge
