We have discussed the fear of the Lord before. A reminder is always beneficial since the word fear often carries a very heavy and profound meaning. The word used by Solomon in this verse, as well as in most other biblical passages, means “a deep, reverent respect for God’s holiness and sovereignty.” Early in my faith journey, I heard Josh McDowell talk about reverence for God this way: “There are no two I have more fun with than God and my wife, but it is a very reverent fun in both cases.” it is important to know that living in humility and with a healthy respect for God is not dour drudgery or sadness. It is actually a beautiful, joy-filled, and exciting way to live and celebrate life. Solomon actually says it brings riches, honor, and life. That’s a pretty good outcome of living in alignment with who God is and who we are. Lest we be confused, the riches in this verse “can include financial prosperity, but commentaries emphasize that it broadly refers to spiritual wealth, peace, and practical, God-given provision rather than a guarantee of earthly materialism.” (AIResource) The word honor reflects a phenomenon that has both man and God showing favor in our story. That’s amazing! The word life here speaks of a deeply meaningful life on earth and eternal life. Today, respect and enjoy your heavenly Father in this great gift of life that He gives us. #BeTheEdge
