There are generally considered to be seven major story themes in life. Almost all stories fit into one or a combination of them. Quickly, they are: “Good vs. Evil: The eternal struggle between moral righteousness and malice, seen in epics and fairy tales. Power and Corruption: How the pursuit or possession of power changes a person or society. Love and Sacrifice: The lengths to which characters will go for romantic partners, family, or friends. Coming of Age: The transition from childhood or innocence to adulthood and maturity. Fate vs. Free Will: The battle between predetermined destiny and personal choice. Identity and Belonging: A character’s journey to discover who they are and where they fit in the world. Redemption and Forgiveness: The possibility of recovering from past mistakes and finding inner peace.” (AIResource) Most of these stories incorporate a good guy versus a bad guy. My preferred genre is when the weak or poor are taken advantage of and someone rises up to get them justice. Maybe one reason I love that storyline is because, in many ways, that’s the Gospel. It’s what Solomon refers to here. Unbeknownst to them, Hollywood has told the Christ story many times and in many ways without realizing it. Superman is a classic example.
