Proverbs 23:29 NIV

A few years ago I started hearing “Redneck Famous Last Words”. If you are a redneck I apologize and mean no disrespect (sort of). A couple favorites were “Hey Bubba, watch this.” And “I wonder what this red wire does.” The humor points to a larger truth. We have all done things where we immediately regret the outcome. Often it is a simple action that results in a sprain, cut, break or loss. Solomon uses that truth in describing the person who over indulges in wine drinking. As a non drinker I still have no shortage of examples of times I’ve stepped outside God’s plan for my life and ended up regretting the results. Sin comes with a cost and often it is painful. The phrase bloodshot eyes is actually more serious than something a few eye drops can clear up. Here he is actually talking about a dimming of vision. We lose the ability to see clearly. I have always loved the two stage miracle where Jesus restores the sight of the blind man. After Jesus spit in the man’s eyes the man saw things less than clearly. Jesus focused the man’s look on Him and his vision became crystal clear. When we take our eyes off the temptations around us and focus on Him our vision is clear and we avoid stumbling. Today, as the great hymn says, turn your eyes upon Jesus. #BeTheEdge

“Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.” Mark‬ ‭8‬:‭25‬ ‭NIV‬‬
