Solomon paints a very graphic image here. In the Middle East a well know plant is the “prickly acanthus, which quickly covers any spot left uncultivated. It is also mentioned in Job 30:7”. The picture we get is of a lazy or slothful life that allows bad habits and influences to take over in their story. A lazy life doesn’t sit empty, it will be filled with something. Jesus tells the story of the man cleaning a demon out of his life only to have the demon return and, finding it empty, returns with seven other demons worse than the first to move in. That is a scary picture. Jesus’ point is that we are to fill our life with the things of God. We allow the indwelling Holy Spirit to invade every part of our story. This truth does not imply an exhausted life although there are times we will be worn out. Jesus actually encourages us to take His life challenge and we will find rest, relaxation and recreation. That sounds good doesn’t it? So lazy leads to overwhelmed by evil while serving God leads to meaning, purpose and rest. Today serve God. #BeTheEdge
