For years, I hired staff to work in ministry with me. It was youth ministry. I was great at hiring. I was awful at hiring well. Too often, I would notify the board about a new hire. After extolling how great they were as people, the questions would inevitably come up about what their references said or whether their background check was clean. I would sit for a moment and then respond that it would have probably been a good idea if I’d done both of those things. More often than not, the staff worked out. A few times, it would have been a really good idea to check references and do a background check. My last bad hire cost me my job. Well, sort of. The point that goes hand in hand with Solomon’s counsel is that, in business leadership as well as running a kingdom, it is critical to have quality people surrounding you in leadership. In the same way, having brothers and sisters in Christ surround us in our journey is critical. People who will speak truth when we are in line or out of line. People who love us enough and care for us enough to help us walk firmly on the path God has for us. And as we walk that path, to do it with integrity and character. Whether it’s a business, a family, or any other area where we fill the role of a leader, God establishes us not only through our actions, but through the counsel He provides through His children. Today, seek wise counsel. #BeTheEdge
