This may be an unpopular devotion. It has nothing to do with your political party or lack there of. Matthew Henry puts it this way, “National sins bring national disorders and the disturbance of the public repose: For the transgression of a land, and a general defection from God and religion to idolatry, profaneness, or immorality, many are the princes thereof, many at the same time pretending to the sovereignty and contending for it, by which the people are crumbled into parties and factions, biting and devouring one another, or many successively, in a little time, one cutting off another, or soon cut off by the hand of God or of a foreign enemy, as the people suffer for the sins of the prince…” in other words, “Politicians play the madmen, and their people suffer for it.” That’s a frightening perspective. It’s also a biblical perspective and I believe somewhat descriptive of our country lately. The converse of this is also true. The sins of the people are a tremendous burden on their rulers. Perhaps leadership is a reflection of the brokenness or health in the hearts of a nations people and their moral values and practices. This is not a finger pointer, although Solomon doesn’t mind doing that, it is a reminder that we need to live Gods truth and be salt and light for those around us.
