In yesterday’s verse, Solomon talked about those who listened to instruction and then did what is right, just, and fair. These concepts were vital to his belief in living as a follower of God. It seems that these traits are second nature for some people, but not for most. Apart from the indwelling Holy Spirit, we are not prone to put others first and live a moral life. It is the conforming to the image of Jesus that brings about these characteristics in a person. They are certainly available to all humans because we are created in the image of our Father. However, there is a ceiling we can attain through our own efforts. John Maxwell talks about the “Law of the Lid.” In youth ministry, I saw very clearly that a young person from a Christian, or at least a church, home very seldom was able to go beyond the standard set by their parents. It was often frustrating. Interestingly, young people who came to Christ from very unspiritual or unchurched homes seemed to have no limit to how far they could grow in the faith. Humans, created in the image of God, can at times show the spark of God early in life. They may even reflect the morality of the group they are part of. However, when a life is yielded to Jesus and God the Father becomes our Father, then obviously the lid is removed. There is no limit to the availability of not only justice and fairness flowing through our lives, but every gift and fruit of the Spirit as well.
