Some of you may know that I have been reviewing movies on the radio for over 30 years. The scenes that most tellingly set up what’s coming next are those where the criminal or the bad guy start laughing at our hero when they tell them what they have done wrong has been discovered. Your next scene usually has the guilty person laughing hysterically with an arrogance that foretells the justice that almost always comes to them in the movies. Tough truth time. In this passage theologians tell us essentially what our hero should know, you waste your time trying to get through to a fool. I have been guilty of being one of those who believes that we can reason with those who shake their fist or point their finger and laugh at the crucifixion rather than embrace it. At times the kingdom of God has taken to yelling at the broken people in this world or trying to reason with them. I’m definitely more a fan of the second approach. However Solomon cautions us against believing that the mind of the truly lost can reason out spiritual truth. Only the power of the Holy Spirit breaking through that darkness can make that happen. Before pointing to another’s approach as being wrong be aware that this verse is not promoting either. Wordsworth notes that “the irreligious fool is won neither by the austere preaching of John the Baptist nor by the mild teaching of Christ, but rejects both.” Today, as God leads, continue to reason with the lost, and be aware your life will preach louder but ultimately God’s Spirit is the only one who can permeate the darkness of the blind. #BeTheEdge
