Proverbs 6:4 NIV

There’s an old saying that goes, “Don’t do today what you can put off until tomorrow.” If you read that quickly, you might misunderstand, but it’s actually a spoof on the real saying: “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” That’s good counsel, though I’ll admit I sometimes have trouble following it. This verse is addressing someone who needs to make things right—especially if they owe a debt to another person. But the principle applies in a much broader way to us as followers of Christ. When God speaks and tells us to move, we need to move immediately. Sometimes His counsel is to wait, but often when He tells us to act right away, we hesitate, reevaluate, and miss the opportunity. When God’s Spirit speaks, it may be that this is the exact moment He intends to work—and He desires to do that work through us. That’s a tremendous gift and honor, but it’s also something we can easily miss by hesitating. It’s okay to test what we hear when we believe God is speaking. It can feel frightening to move quickly in response to the voice of God, but it can also be incredibly exciting. The more often we step out and see the results of God at work, the more thrilling it becomes to know that when He speaks and we obey, He moves. Today, listen—and obey—right away. #BeTheEdge
