Proverbs 9:12 NIV

There are a lot of themes that run through Proverbs. However, the one overriding theme throughout the entire book is that we should be wise rather than foolish. Solomon spends a lot of time unpacking the difference between the two ways of living. He gives great examples, illustrations and reveals the consequences of the choice. Paul puts it much more succinctly, “live, not as unwise but as wise” (Eph.‬ ‭5:15‬ ‭NIV‬‬). I prefer Paul’s approach – direct and to the point. However, I find I often need Solomons approach – illustrative and instructive. The fuller picture of the clear difference and the reminders of the consequences tend to be more powerful in encouraging the correct response from me. Knowing that foolish living brings devastation, despair, and ultimately death can certainly be more impactful on my behavior than just a reminder to “act wisely.” That’s a shame and thankfully as I grow older and hopefully wiser I tend to need less of the illustration and respond quicker to the direct truth. All this is about maturity. Today allow the words of Solomon to encourage wise thought and action and as they do “live as the wise”. #BeTheEdge
