“Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” Proverbs 13:20 NIV
Recently, I met with a couple of business leaders. During our conversation, one of them mentioned that he was at the stage in life and business where he really only wanted to invest or do business with people he enjoyed being around. Obviously, it’s a luxury to reach that point, but it does communicate some of what is at the core of Solomon’s thought in this passage. This is not about surrounding ourselves with yes-people or those who only agree with our opinions. It’s about surrounding ourselves with the wise—and as a result, we will become wise. It makes sense that people of wisdom are desirable to be around. The truly wise understand that following Christ and being filled with His Spirit is the greatest desire we could have. The result of that life is one filled with the fruit of the Spirit. And who doesn’t want to be around someone living out the fruit of the Spirit? Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control combine to make a pretty spectacular person. That’s a great description of the kind of person we want to marry, the kind we want to raise, and the kind we want to work for and hang out with. What is in their life will overflow and influence those around them. Today, walk with the wise. #BeTheEdge
