“Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.”
The image of the person who drinks too much and then becomes loud and ornery is common in film and tv, but also in life. If you’ve ever taken in a live sporting event, maybe not tennis, you have most likely witnessed an inebriated fan. Often they get loud. If a fight breaks out typically one or both participants have over indulged in alcohol. Fighting is foolish period. When driven by other influences it is particularly foolish. “Controversialists of all sorts, porcupine-like people, who go through the world all sharp quills sticking out to pierce, are less to be admired than peace-loving souls. Any fool can ‘show his teeth,’ as the word for ‘quarrelling’ means. But it takes a wise man, and a man whose spirit has been made meek by dwelling near God in Christ, to withhold the angry word, the quick retort. It is generally best to let the glove flung down lie where it is. There are better things to do than to squabble.” (McLaren’s) Those who either don’t drink too much or don’t drink at all may be feeling safe with this topic. Don’t. This truth relates to anything that can steal our attention and cloud our judgment. All sin, by definition, moves us away from God’s plan and onto dangerous paths. The last three words of this verse are a powerful caution. Living unwisely is dangerous. At those times we open ourselves up to the worst Satan has to offer. Today walk safely only under the influence of the Holy Spirit. #BeTheEdge
