“The human spirit is the lamp of the Lord that sheds light on one’s inmost being.”
In my life as a follower of Christ, I’ve heard sermons, read devotionals, and studied many passages about how Jesus is the light of the world, and how we are to allow His life to shine through us in such a way that the world sees it and is drawn to the God we serve. Here, Solomon takes a slightly different look at that light and its source. This gives us a picture of God’s light implanted in our spirit, deep down in our soul, to give us a clear look at what is inside us and how we operate. Some call it our conscience, or the quickening of the Holy Spirit—and I’m sure both of those are true to an extent. But ultimately, it is God’s light planted deep within us to provide guidance and clarity as we serve and follow our Creator. It is how He looks into us and sees who we truly are in Him. Proverbs encourages us in a number of places to be introspective, to consider who we are, and to determine how to most effectively follow God our King. It also involves conviction of right and wrong, helping us understand sin and its impact on our journey. When we come to Christ and this light is planted deep within our soul, we no longer have to live or walk in darkness. Ultimately, this verse gives context to the reality that God’s light is deeply embedded in us, shining through us as we live obediently to Him, surrounding and leading us as we move forward in this world. His light—the light—is part of every ounce of our existence from the moment we invite Him in, throughout all of eternity. Today, live in the light. #BeTheEdge
