“One who is wise can go up against the city of the mighty and pull down the stronghold in which they trust.”
At the heart of this verse is an assurance from Solomon that God’s people will be looked after. Even when it appears they are being defeated or overwhelmed in the short term, there’s an implicit truth and promise that goes beyond today and even beyond the duration of our lifetime into future generations. As I age, I find the thought of God’s blessing on my children and grandchildren, and even further beyond, to be not only comforting but empowering. I had a conversation with my youngest grandson the other day. He was informing me when I cross over from “fun” to “annoying.” In the course of that, I jokingly said, “You’re gonna miss my annoying one day,” and he responded, “I don’t think so.” I assured him he would one day be an annoying grandfather himself, and he said he wouldn’t. I asked him how he would be different, and he told me he wasn’t sure how he’d be different, but he was certainly going to make sure that the first thing he was as a grandfather was a strong Christian. I felt a great joy in my heart. That is the power to pull down the strongholds that a secular world trusts in. If we can pass along a genuine love for, commitment to, and service for our God and King to our children and grandchildren, then we give them the greatest gift we possibly could. We also assure them of a future and a hope, regardless of what the world might be throwing at them at the time. Today, live in the wisdom of God. #BeTheEdge
