“Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. …”
Thousands of Crucifixion’s lined the roads in and out of the cities right before Jesus’ day. It was a gruesome favorite form of torture and death sentence for the Roman Empire. It truly made all citizens tremble.
When Jesus mentioned taking up a cross, it was not a beautiful cross on a chain or a stained-glass window hanging in a church. Just watch “The Passion of The Christ.” Our word for excruciating comes from the same root word as crucifixion.
