The implication in this verse is that before an issue turns into a quarrel, we know it’s about to happen. We are aware that emotions and conflict will be the result of what we are about to get into before it happens. That means we either have history with the subject or with a person that instructs our heart and mind where we’re headed. And Solomon very clearly tells us: don’t even go there. Drop it before it starts. The other implication is that since we know where it’s headed, when we don’t drop it ahead of time, we want the quarrel. The only reason to walk into a fight that we know is coming is because we want it. Perhaps we genuinely think we will win and that there is something to gain from it, or we just can’t help ourselves. If that’s the case, we must recognize that God offers us the ability to resist the temptation to go there. Finally, this verse also clearly implies that we have in our hearts the desire to be peacemakers, planted there by our Savior, the Prince of Peace. Peacemakers walk away from potential arguments, even when they believe they are completely right, because as we learn in life, being right is not nearly as important as doing right.
