Proverbs 18:4 NASB

I used to think this proverb meant that the words everyone speaks are deep and meaningful. It didn’t take long, especially around certain people, to realize that was not what Solomon meant at all. Not even a little bit. What he is saying here is that we reveal what is deep in our heart by the words that come out of our mouth. No doubt I have been around some men and women in my life who, when they speak, my journey is greatly enriched. I count some of my dearest lifelong friends on that list. As a matter of fact, I don’t believe they get on my ‘lifelong friends’ list without that being true. The ones who don’t stay in my story long are the ones who reveal an ugliness or selfishness or just plain old shallowness by the words of their mouth. I have also discovered the ones with deep and wise words tend to speak less and with a greater degree of humility than those whose words are lacking. It is not really that difficult to tell the difference. The ones whose words enhance my story tend to be life giving and as refreshing to my soul as a cool ‘babbling brook’ on a hot day. Today, speak the words of a life giver, or be silent. #BeTheEdge
