Proverbs 22:1 NIV

As someone prepared to replace me in a position I had served in for many years, they asked me what I wanted my legacy to be. I thought for just a moment and responded, “I don’t want any legacy other than that I loved Jesus and was kind. If they tossed in that I was fun, that would be okay.” That answer came from the awareness that, when I’m gone, I will soon be forgotten by most. But I deeply desire that my grandchildren—and their parents—would know Jesus and know that I loved them. I hope to leave behind some resources to give them a financial boost, but it’s doubtful that will amount to much more than a good meal to share stories and hopefully some laughs. The people I know with substantial wealth generally fall into one of two categories: either they are grateful and recognize God’s gracious hand in their life circumstances, or they believe they pulled it off alone. The first group blesses the world with their generosity, while the second tends to hoard what they have or manipulate others with it. Those who know them can usually tell the difference. I enjoy hearing others speak of Christ-followers—whether they have much or little—as men and women of high regard and good hearts. Their names bring smiles, respect, and reflect well on their Savior. No one wants their bank balance on their gravestone. “Here lies a kind, generous follower of God”—now that’s a win. Today, earn the name Christ-follower. #VeTheEdge
