What a gift. I know in the very popular Back to the Future movies there were some interesting things that Michael J. Fox’s character benefited from by knowing the future. At times I used to find myself ponding how knowing the future could be useful. Charles Spurgeon calls it a tremendous gift that we don’t. He writes, “What a great mercy it is that we do not know “what a day may bring forth”! We are often thankful for knowledge, but in this case we may be particularly grateful for ignorance. It is the glory of God, we are told, to conceal a thing, and it most certainly is for the happiness of mankind that he should conceal their future.” While going to school in Asheville, NC one of my sons educated me on the plight of the “trust fund” kid. They knew they would be coming into serious money from a family trust at a certain age and tended to waste their life in the meantime. Many were the homeless kids and drug adicts who, knowing there was a “bright” future waiting, died on the streets before ever getting to the payday. Our nature could cause the same thing in us. Realizing Jesus was coming back caused the first century believers, and should us as well, to live lives worthy of Gods salvation with one eye on on their calling and the other on the clouds.
