As is with so many of the Proverbs, the clarity of this verse almost doesn’t need explanation. However, a reminder of its simple meaning can certainly help us move forward towards being a bit wiser today. There are actual web sites about repairing hurt feelings when we send an errant and hurtful text or speak thoughtlessly spoken words. Nevertherightword.com is but one example. These situations tend to happen in the course of an ongoing exchange, and before we fully realize what we have said and how it has offended or hurt the other person or persons. Our spouse, children, friends, or employees are all possible victims of offending comments. The fact that there are whole web sites and blogs devoted to fixing them is evidence enough that it is a way too common occurrence. I’ve discovered that being silent is my best defense against wounding someone else’s spirit or heart with a loose statement. I just finished an article in Inc. magazine about why we tend to talk too much. None of the reasons reflect well on us. Scripture is filled with examples of the need to control our tongue. Today, try to end the day with fewer regrets and more reasons for both us and others to celebrate. Think more, speak less, and pray always. #BeTheEdge
