Proverbs 14:8 NIV

“The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception.” ‬‬

After writing a devotion from a verse in proverbs I remember thinking, “wow, that’s some good truth. I certainly hope (certain person) reads it and takes it to heart”. Instantly I felt a strong twinge of conviction. It came from the realization that I had no business telling anyone what they need to get from a passage of scripture. My strategy has always been to learn what I need from scripture and hope that it might help someone else. The rebukes and challenges in devotions from Proverbs, the lessons when I preach and teach are what I need to hear and hopefully are beneficial to others. Years ago I changed my vocabulary to never tell someone what they should do or needed to do. I might suggest a possible consideration but I realize that no matter what I think I know about another’s journey there are always things I’m unaware of. Here Solomon clearly let’s us know that the wise person focuses on their journey and what and why they are doing the things they are doing. I’ve discovered that as I focus on how to be a better follower of God it leaves little time or arrogance to assume how someone else should live. Of course there are things we know. If someone is interested I can tell them exactly what they need to do to enter into a relationship with God through Jesus. I can share about the consequences of sin and how critical it is to avoid it. There are truths from scripture that when asked I freely share. Other than that only God truly knows what someone “needs” to do or how they “should” live. Today look deeply into how and why you do what you do, change where God convicts and let His Spirit direct others on their journey. #BeTheEdge
