“let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—”
The wisest people I know never stop learning. I’m convinced that this is probably a big part of why they are so wise. I’ve known some men and women in leadership who act as though they have arrived. They pretty much know all they need to, and now they are ready to tell everyone else what they should know. In many ways, the truth of this verse is seen in those people who realize that the more they know about God, the more they understand just how little they truly know Him. As a young believer, I felt pretty sure I had been given the full revelation of what God wanted me to know. Thankfully, I began working in youth ministry and found that teenagers were very direct and honest in their questions and doubts. I also learned that bluffing my way through an answer didn’t fool them. Very quickly, I began to gather men around me who had walked longer and studied deeper into the faith, and who were willing not just to share what they learned but how they had learned it. Listening, learning, and offering ready guidance are some of the greatest gifts God gives us the ability to practice—no matter what age or stage of life we are in. Occasionally, I forget to share what someone is asking me for as I get lost in fascination about who they are, what their journey has been, and how they fulfill their calling. Today, listen and learn. #BeTheEdge
