Proverbs 17:12 NIV

“Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool bent on folly.”

A lot has been said about the “momma bear” protecting her children. I’ve heard lots of women refer to themselves this way when someone has hurt or threatened their kids. Jerome says this is for very good reason. He posits that there is no animal more ferocious than a she bear who is missing her young or hungry. Yet here Solomon tells us that even that is preferable to dealing with a fool who is determined in their foolish activity. Obviously the best way to avoid the consequences of both these situations is to stay away from them. However, in the same way most bear attacks are not planned encounters the actions of a fool spilling over into your life can very well be unintended. A person driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is certainly a dangerous and foolish behavior. We all have stories of the innocent lives destroyed by encountering this person. Other than the accidental encounter it is incumbent on a wise person to avoid foolish people when possible. The consequences of their lives are almost always costly and not God honoring. Today seek out wise friendships. #BeTheEdge
