“Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker; whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished.”
When I was young there were times I wanted to see someone fail just to get even with them for something they had done to me or someone I cared about. Solomon is not pleased with that. Neither is God. The reason I say “there were times” is that I not only learned this truth early in my journey, but I’ve also been powerfully convicted by God’s truth. As a matter of fact, He often tells us to do just the opposite—to return evil and mistreatment with kindness. If you really want your life to reflect the Creator in a way that contrasts the behavior of the world with that of His followers, learn this truth. Nothing speaks louder than seeing someone who has been blatantly mistreated respond with love and kindness. Nothing in this passage, or in God’s Word, encourages a person who is being abused to remain in an abusive situation. This is about mistreatment at work and in life and in responding to others’ misfortune. We are to stand with the poor and the mistreated. Jesus was very clear about that. Today, be the world’s shock absorber. #BeTheEdge
