Proverbs 17:5 NIV

“Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker; whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished.”

The phrase “will not go unpunished” is literally “The cup shall be put into his hands.” I don’t know why anyone would mock the poor. Someone might choose to ignore them, give lip service to their cause, but to mock them is not only cruel, it’s ignorant. I don’t know anyone who would mock the financially poor but I sadly know some who would mock the poor in spirit or poor in status. I’ve witnessed it and it’s so disheartening. Thankfully no one I’m close to does that. Celebrating someone’s disaster is also cruel. I have had that done to me on an occasion and truly struggled to grasp why the person celebrated. I’ve watched a worse situation happen a few years later in their story. It’s still happening and I take no pleasure in it. However, God tells us that we will reap what we sow. Or as Solomon states here, the cup is now in their hands. As we cheapen another’s life circumstances we are taking a shot at their creator and that’s a dangerous thing to do. God is the advocate of the poor, broken and suffering. We better do likewise and advocate for them as well. If not we are on the wrong side of that story and when we see who is lined up across from us we better be terrified. And change sides. Today have your Lords heart for the poor and suffering. #BeTheEdhe
