Proverbs 19:28 NIV

“A corrupt witness mocks at justice, and the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil.” ‭‭

This is a tough verse. Mocking justice and devouring wickedness and evil sound like not only an awful way to live, but also a very sad and dangerous person to deal with. This is not just a casual person who lies about what they saw in a court of law. That certainly qualifies here, but this goes far beyond that. This is a person who is corrupt at their core. This is someone who is lost—someone who, in their own anger, sadness, and brokenness, wants to disrupt and cause damage and destruction through what they say. The false witness described here is someone who lies against the innocent, partly to get ahead and partly simply because they can. It is someone who stands against the balanced and legitimate function of society and seeks to disrupt the legal underpinnings that help us all interact in life on a daily basis. They almost cannot be satisfied by the wickedness that comes out of their mouth. This goes beyond those who simply want to disrupt and cause pain and suffering to others who are trying to live honestly and fairly in society. This is someone who wants to hurt people. There is very little that is as dark and dangerous as a person who finds a twisted pleasure in seeing others suffer. It is hard at times for me to believe that this kind of person even exists—but they do. Scripture makes that clear. Praise the Lord that our protection from these people is not found in forcing them to be kind or to tell the truth. Our protection is found in the God of this universe, who is stronger, wiser, and kinder than the most evil person who has ever lived. Today, find your confidence and your safety in Him. #BeTheEdge
