“He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who keeps understanding will find good.” Proverbs 19:8 NASB
We have lost many famous people and great voices in the past couple months. Most recently, Rep. John Lewis, actress Kelly Preston, actor Nick Cordero, comedian Carl Reiner, rock ‘n’ roll icon Little Richard, jazz musician Manu Dibango, country music star Kenny Rogers, NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, Oscar-winning actor Kirk Douglas, NBA legend Kobe Bryant, and WWE wrestler Rocky Johnson are among those who have died in 2020. Thousands of others have been lost to COVID-19. On May 19th of this year we lost Ravi Zacharias, and two days ago J.I. Packer died. Of all of those we’ve lost, these last two have impacted God’s kingdom through their life more than all the others. In every century there are a few men and women who stand out as great heroes and minds, people who have brought God’s truth and wisdom within the grasp of average men and women. These were two of the most powerful. Now they are gone, but thankfully, we will have access to their writings and recordings for the rest of time. At times like this, there is a realization that the world needs men and women of great intellect and love of God and His word to step up and speak. I was reminded of this the day after J.I. Packer died, when I received my 4th copy in over 40 years of his book, “Evangelism and The Sovereignty of God” in the mail. We don’t need Christian how-to books or four-step formulas to knowing God. We need theologians who dive into God’s deep and holy places, dig up truth, and share it. Today, seek God at His depth and be changed at yours. #BeTheEdg
