Proverbs 20:16 NIV

“Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger; hold it in pledge if it is done for an outsider.”

Solomon teaches in this verse and in this chapter as well that taking risks does not show courage. It also shows a lack of wisdom. The term for this behavior is surety and he lets us know a few times in Proverbs that he is not a fan. Neither is God. I once co-signed on a house loan and as a result it strained my marriage and caused anxiety that was not the sign of being in God’s will. If you can afford it and not miss the money if it’s lost that’s a different story. However that needs to be coupled with the reality that it can be harmful to the growth of the individual to take that responsibility off of them and put it on yourself. The seriousness was better understood in Solomon’s day when the one giving surety could be taken as well as his wife and children to make right an unpaid debt the he stood for. That’s frightening. I can’t really imagine why anyone would do it. It is a great picture of Jesus taking responsibility for the debt we owed God for our sin that we could never pay. He knew when He created us what it would eventually cost Him and He breathed life into our lungs anyway. Today avoid foolish debt and live as though His life paid the debt you owed. #BeTheEdge
