“When a king sits on his throne to judge, he winnows out all evil with his eyes.”
Solomon is making the point that when the leader is present, it is difficult for those in their care—citizens in his time, children or employees in ours—to get away with anything. When the person is a good leader, they set a tone and an environment that calls for good, honest behavior. Justice is the byproduct throughout the community of just leadership. Families benefit when parents are present and living a good, honest, moral life. We all do. He is reflecting on the truth that God watches all of us and everything, all the way down to our motives. When we live with that realization, it has a purifying effect on our thoughts and behavior. I love a good Western. Often the premise is of a town with either a bad or no sheriff that makes it a dangerous place to live, and consequently the corrupt run the place. Then the sheriff with moral integrity shows up, fights a battle with the corrupt, wins, and restores the town to a place of peace and prosperity. Pretty simplified, but it does reveal the truth Solomon is sharing in this verse. It is better when good is watching over us.
