Proverbs 21:11 NIV

“When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; by paying attention to the wise they get knowledge.”

One of the greatest gifts God gave me was an older brother. There are lots of reasons I say that but one of the main reasons was because I watched what he did and, depending on the consequences, either copied the behavior or avoided it. If Larry got in trouble for something he did or didn’t do I avoided that particular consequence by doing the opposite. Solomon gives a similar observation here. Part of the secret to this truth is that one meaning of “the simple” is “humble”. To learn from another’s example takes humility. It means we acknowledge that we don’t know it all. We can learn even from observing the mocker, the foolish. Without humility we will not learn from another’s example. We have a tendency to think we are already too smart to commit their blunders. This humility also helps us recognize the wise people in our journey. So this verse tells us that we gain wisdom from both observing the foolish as well as the wise. Their is something to learn by humbly watching both as long as we recognize the difference. Today humbly observe life and how God is working in others. #BeTheEdge
