Proverbs 21:8 NIV

“The way of the guilty is devious, but the conduct of the innocent is upright.”

Guilt and innocence. We live in a world that I’m not sure always knows the difference anymore, and that can be frightening. Here, Solomon gives us some help in determining the difference—it is the contrast between devious and upright. I believe these are easier to distinguish. My daughter recently introduced me to the spelling and grammar help available with ChatGPT. You may have noticed. Out of curiosity, I tested this artificial intelligence by asking if it knew the difference between the concepts of “devious” and “upright.” Here is what it said: “The difference between ‘devious’ and ‘upright’ lies in their moral and ethical connotations. In essence, a devious person bends or breaks moral rules for personal benefit, while an upright person follows them even when it’s difficult.” Pretty good for an amoral, soulless series of ones and zeroes. God has given all of us a soul and a moral compass—it’s part of being created in His image. Over time, the broken, fallen nature we are all born with (thanks, Adam and Eve) spreads its influence in our lives. But God’s gift of salvation redeems our past and restores our innocence. For that, we celebrate. Today, walk in uprightness. #BeTheEdge

“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.” Psalms‬ ‭84‬:‭11‬ ‭NIV‬‬
