“None who go to her return or attain the paths of life.”
This is a tough one. Though many scholars over the centuries were prone to make adultery or fornication the unpardonable sin we can be sure it’s not. The belief was brought about by this verse and others making a similar declaration. It is almost impossible to extricate one’s self from this particular sin and lifestyle. Solomon gives a stern and frightening description of this sins consequences. He says it will kill you. Primarily it brings spiritual death. St. Chrysostom says, “It is as difficult to bring back a libidinous person to chastity as a dead man to life.” (Pulpit Commentary) All sin takes advantage of human nature’s addictive element. It sinks its teeth into our flesh and spirit and won’t let go. Many sins will haunt us the rest of our life. One of the most anticipated gifts of eternal life will be the release of temptation and sin in our story. The power of the Holy Spirit, essentially non-existent in the God followers story before Pentecost is now given as a gift to every believer upon rebirth. Unlike the men and women of Old Testament times we now have the indwelling power that raised Jesus from the dead in our lives to rescue us from the power of sin and death.
