“Rich and poor have this in common: The LORD is the Maker of them all.”
I find it helpful, when looking for context with this verse, to think about families. Regardless of the disparity in personalities, interests, and tastes, siblings share parents and, therefore, a family context. When they grow and go in separate directions—building careers, starting their own families, and even living in different places—they still have the foundation of their family heritage and the deep connection that comes with it. I see this in healthy families. As children grow older, their connection can actually strengthen. I watch siblings look after one another in times of need, whether that need is financial or emotional. When a crisis hits, such as sickness or the loss of a parent or sibling, I see them draw close together. That’s a healthy family. As siblings grow, they often find themselves in very different economic situations. That’s where I see this verse: rich or poor, those siblings share a common parentage and history. Rich or poor, we all share the same heavenly Father, the same Savior, the same choices for eternity, and the same responsibility to love and care for one another.
